Welcome to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States of America!
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the ROK-U.S. alliance. Built upon the shared values and trust, the ROK-U.S. alliance has faithfully served its role of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia for the past sixty years. With the advent of a new era and the rise of Korea as an emerging economic power with its full-fledged democracy, the alliance has developed into a mutually beneficial partnership. The implementation of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement in 2012 fostered a pathway towards increased economic prosperity, as well as greater social, cultural and interpersonal exchange between Korea and the United States. Furthermore, Korea and the United States have joined hands in confronting global issues including climate change and nuclear weapon proliferation, while working towards further cooperation in areas such as development, human rights, and other global matters of concern.
With this mutual understanding on the development of the ROK-U.S. alliance, President Park Geun-hye and President Barack Obama jointly issued a "declaration in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the alliance between the Republic of Korea and the United States of America" during President Park's visit to the United States in May 2013. The historic statement heralds a new direction for future bilateral relations between both countries.
It also highlights the 60-year-long journey towards peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. The U.S. commitment to stability on the Korean Peninsula through its military, as well as its economic cooperation, has helped establish a firm foundation for peace. Our relationship has progressed significantly in the 21st century and will continue to do so under the principles outlined in the joint declaration.
The vibrant Korean-American community has played a pivotal role bridging Korea and the United States. Through hard work, integrity, and leadership in many fields, over two million Americans of Korean descent have contributed in immeasurable ways not only to the ROK-U.S. alliance, but also to society in general. Looking forward, I believe this community can play an even more visible role conducting outreach in the U.S. society, and that together we can work side-by-side to promote Korea-U.S. relations in a meaningful way.
